LEGAL SERVICES
The Legal Services Section falls under the Registrar’s Department providing in-house legal advice to the University. Legal Services is responsible for handling, monitoring and advising the executive on all legal issues of the University, including attending to the Institution's lawsuits, and compliance matters and training staff on pertinent legal issues in a bid to minimise incidents of legal liability. Furthermore, the Section is responsible for the development and/or review of the University's research and commercial agreements; contracts, partnerships and collaboration agreements; intellectual property registration and management protocols; and data protection protocols.

Establish a proactive Legal Services Section to ensure compliance and minimise incidents of legal liability and ultimately assist the University to achieve its mission.
The Section aims to be professional in all its engagements, always exuding excellence and integrity and lastly acting in an ethical manner upholding the values of the legal profession.
Legal Representation
The Legal Services Section acts for and on behalf of the University in legal matters and are complemented and supported by external law firms. As a policy and principle the Section shall not represent individual students, staff or any other independent wing or affiliate except when these individuals are named as defendants in litigation as a result of actions or omissions within the course and scope of their employment or institutional representation.
The Department’s activities can be broken down into three practices areas namely :
- Providing advice to the executive of the University
- Matters arising from labour related issues and student affairs
- Disciplinary hearings, complaints and claims
- Staff and student polices
- Support to the business units of the University
- Reviewing and drafting of contracts and other documents
- Academic agreements with other institutions and faculties
- Procurement procedures and requirements
- Any other campus related business
- Governance and executive matters
- Advising and supporting the executive and management
- Updating policies and regulations that affect the institution
- Ensuring compliance to legislation and regulations
- Drafting of policies for the University
The Departments day to day activities include the following,
- Negotiating, drafting and assessing contracts and other legal documents
- Providing legal advice over a broad spectrum and managing all litigation in coordination with external legal counsel
- Providing legal support for both staff and student disciplinary matters
